THE DESIGNER

Joe Colombo for B—Line

Born in Milan in 1930, Joe Colombo transformed from painter to design revolutionary in less than a decade. His meteoric rise—opening his studio in 1963, winning the Gold Compass by 1967, and placing three works in MoMA by 1969—was driven by an unwavering belief in technology's power to enhance daily life.

Where others viewed plastic as merely utilitarian, Colombo saw possibility: injection-molded ABS transformed into a design icon that has remained in continuous production for over 50 years. Originally produced by Bieffeplast until 1999, the trolley found new life when B-Line acquired the rights and continues manufacturing it today, proving that great design transcends both trends and time.
