Chigusa is a word used in some of Japan's oldest surviving anthologies of poetry, such as the Kokin Waka Shu and Manyoshu, and refers to a great variety of plants and flowers. The name was chosen out of a desire to emphasise the ancient Japanese sense of suppleness and sophistication.
