Eva Solo is now launching a brand new mortar design which has not been created for appearances alone. Instead, the designers have taken a critical look at the traditional mortar to see where there was room for improvement.
The Eva Solo mortar offers a number of innovative functions. In the bottom of the bowl are transverse grooves which ensure that herbs and spices do not just get pushed around by the pestle. The oblong, rounded shape of the bowl provides a good grip, and the non-slip base ensures the mortar sits firmly on the worktop without leaving any scratches.
The pestle handle is designed for a firm and secure grip. Moreover, it is just the right size for placing inside the mortar after use, so it hardly takes up any space in the kitchen cupboard.
The mortar was designed by two designers, brothers Adrian and Jeremy Wright. They explain how they closely examined the classic mortar before developing their own innovative version. “There is something about a mortar which is very back to basics,” says Jeremy Wright in his well-spoken English. “It is extremely satisfying grinding your own herbs and spices rather than tipping them out of a plastic bag. We wanted to preserve this feeling while ironing out the flaws associated with the traditional mortar – for example that it is hard to get a proper grip, that a mortar takes up a lot of space and that the pestle is often a little unwieldy.
The mortar is made of porcelain, while the base and the pestle handle are made of silicone. It comes with a black contrast colour or in a lime green that helps to complete the impression of a breath of fresh air in the kitchen. The grooves in the bottom are designed for easy cleaning.
