Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) was born in Viipuri in Eastern Finland which later influenced his work through the area’s landscape and traditional folklore. He started his career by studying ceramics at the Institute of Industrials Arts in Helsinki, leading to his interest in sculpture techniques. Toikka learned traditional ceramic techniques at the Arabia porcelain factory before working at Nuutaj?rvi in 1963. Toikka created the Flycatcher in 1972, which led to his series of beautifully handcrafted glass blown birds. His glass birds are known for being collectible items and are still handcrafted by skilled glassblowers today.
