The title sequence to North by Northwest is a work of genius--designer Saul Bass starts with a grid and skews it, then slowly reveals it to be the windowed surface of a Madison Avenue high-rise. The angle of words and lines, and the way the words slide in and out of the grid, reflect the bustle and busyness of Manhattan. What's particularly interesting about the sequence is how it uses a grid to produce a feeling of energy and freedom, rather than being locked in stasis. The print on twenty2's Acco 22 pillow does much the same thing, substituting lightness for motion. Its debt to modernism (although not specifically to Mondrian; that's what Gerrit Rietveld was invented for) is clear but not overwhelming, and the result is an airy, friendly, pattern, screen-printed by hand on linen for maximum comfort.
