Single Artwork and Symmetrical Displays
As you consider your artwork and the display of the pieces, you’ll first want to decide what kind of statement you want to make. Do you want a serene space, a dramatic space, a stimulating space? Whatever the feel, the tone of your room can be dictated by the rhythm of the objects, or how your eye moves from one piece to the next. To begin our chat we’ll tackle some of the more common concepts: 1.) Single Artwork Displays and 2.) Symmetrical Arrangements.
A Single Piece of Art
Showcasing just one piece of art such as an Amenity Large Wall Print or a Fauna Balsa Wall Hanging is a sure fire way to creating a focal point for a room and/or keep things simple.
Some pieces will even have a pretty hefty visual weight to them that they are best displayed alone. For example, large, dark, oddly shaped, boldly patterned pieces will appear heavier and bigger than pale, traditionally shaped, small pieces.
It is also important to keep scale and balance in mind, especially when considering large items. Bigger isn’t always better. In a small space a large piece can easily be overwhelming and make your room feel even smaller. Weighty objects should be placed near similarly weighty furniture or architecture to keep the proportion and balance level.
Symmetrical Arrangements
Symmetrical arrangements, or arranging pieces in a mirrored fashion, are a great way to provide balance and unity to a room that may have a lot of unique or varied furnishings, or to smaller spaces that can’t afford the chaos of a collage or a large print. Symmetry also creates more of a sense of formality and structure for those of us who like order.
A few considerations to keep in mind when creating a balanced arrangement:
1. ) In general, odd numbered objects (the “rule of threes”) are more interesting to the eye. This is just a suggestion, not a requirement.
2.) Think about the white space between your pieces as well as around the collection as a whole. If placing the arrangement above a piece of furniture six to eight inches is a good place to start.
3.) Get creative! Covering an expanse of wall with pieces of similar style can have a very strong impact while also remaining clean and organized.
Maybe by now you are thinking, “Yes! I need to keep things simple. Balanced wall art is my thing!” A+ for figuring that out so quickly. But, don’t let it stop you from exploring all the options.
Or, perhaps your walls are already in a symmetrical format and you are craving something spicier. Let’s then move on to the next round of ideas and see what comes of it…asymmetrical arrangements!
