At Design Public, we believe that platform beds are superior options because of their versatility and affordability. A modern platform bed only requires a regular innerspring mattress or a futon mattress, so there is no need for the bulky, cumbersome and often costly box spring.

When choosing a platform bed, look for a hardwood frame such as maple, oak, or MDF. Slats are mostly made from spruce or poplar. Lift the mattress to check that that there are enough of them reaching the whole length of the bed so that they support the mattress well.

Mattresses

Modern mattresses are now thick enough that the traditional box spring is in most cases unnecessary. Of course, for those who prefer the look and the bed height of a box spring, a platform bed can still be set up to accept a box spring. This is particularly useful for sleepers with bad backs who may require an orthopedic mattress or those who only get on with box springs.
