True design work and attention to detail is seen in Pablo’s Link Task Lamp designed by Peter Stathis. Consideration has been placed on the wiring, or lack there of as the conductive aluminum skin efficiently delivers power without any internal wiring. All of the component parts have been minimalized (all are purposed for more than one function) so only what is essential is remaining. The array of LED bulbs produces a significant amount of light while also using 97% less energy than regular comparable incandescent light bulbs commonly used in task lamps. Not to mention it looks cool! This will NOT be one of those lamps that gets kicked to the curb.
Jed Crystal of Hepper recently sent us the details on the new and improved (and VERY popular) Hepper Pod Pet Beds. The improvements include: reversible, removable, washable interior pad; a new frame design with thicker metal and no welds; a larger opening for fat cats; and the frame breaks down upon the event you need to stash the pod. Here is Jed putting together the pet bed:
There is no doubt that Alexander Girard graphics are iconic. For the first time since 1972, several of his prints are now available as wall art. Yes, you heard me right. The PLYprint® panels are printed using water-based inks on Columbia Forest Products US made, formaldehyde-free plywood panels. What a fabulous gift for Alexander Girard admirers, or art collectors, or simply those who appreciate the mix between modern materials and and folk art forms to create accessible art.
Tina Frey Designs (no not Tina Fey) is a San Francisco based designer who sculpts each vase, tray and bowl in clay and casts them in resin – then hand finishes each one for a completely unique piece. The color choices reflect her jewelry design background…bright candy colors…actually I like the modern popsicle analogy better. Yum!
David Weeks knows just how to tap into your softer, gorilla-y side…HANNO! How fun would it be to have a wood gorilla around as part or your collection? I say replace your wooden drawing doll with a gorilla or give HANNO to your favorite wee one for guaranteed hours of wooden gorilla play time.
The Eames Elephants have been a talked about DP employee favorite for quite some time, but now that Vitra is making the plastic version there is even more of a buzz in the air. Designed for kids in mind, the plastic version of the original plywood toy can be used inside or out, as a decorative piece or as a toy. What little tyke wouldn’t love one of these?
As an added Eames Elephant treat…check out this video made by eamesdemetrios titled “A Gathering of Elephants.” Word to the wise: you are going to want a Vitra Eames Elephant after you watch this. No doubt.
Kudos to designers like Ollie and Lime. Although kids may be drawn to mass marketed cartoon characters they can also be encouraged to appreciate good design from a young age. Made in the USA with an appreciation for the environment, Ollie and Lime bedding and decor has a simple but bold aesthetic. I can totally envision dawning a toddler’s room using their bedding pieces. The space would have an urban yet modern yet retro feel. Trust me, 20 years from now your kids will thank you for it.
No kids? Well, I bet you might enjoy their Little Egg (owls!!!) poster.

The Fatboy Avenuee has me sold. Ever since my trip to Morocco I have been contemplating adding some sort of pouf seating option to my home but wanted something a bit more modern than the traditional Moroccan pouf. Yay for Fatboy! I love the square shape of the “First Block” for a simple seating option, but imagine combining all of their Avenue shapes together to create a long chain of seating. Fun for a home, great for a communal space like a library or lounge and even better for an outdoor party! It is never too soon to start thinking about warmer weather.
For some reason the Wallter Slat Rack reminds me of a picketed fence. But this fruit falls far from the tree of the traditional American dream home. The Wallter Slat Rack is a play on Wallter’s popular wall applications which are intended for just decorative use. But the Slat Rack is functional, so you can acheive the same aesthetic with practical benefits. The wide grooves and elongated shelf holds magazines, umbrellas, bills and jackets all in one place. Why not make something as simple as a coat rack a bigger deal than a mere hook in the wall? New design should marry form and function, and challenge traditional concepts of what constitutes art. I believe the Wallter Slat Rack does just that. The Slat Rack comes in Brown, Green, Orange and White, and to noone’s great surprise, this great design piece can be found right here at Design Public.
For those active DP shoppers who are tired of reading about new baby products, we are SO excited to introduce the Cycloc to you! This unique, four time award-winning bicycle storage unit is perfect for metropolitan apartment dwellers and picket fence home-makers alike. While adhering to the DP mantra of modern, attractive design, the indoor/outdoor-friendly Cycloc measures less than a foot wide, but its deceptively robust design allows for it to securely hold most any frame vertically or horizontally. It also comes in four colors, includes contact pads to protect your frame, and a little nook and cranny for your gloves, glasses, lights, tape, tool kit- you name it. I know, it looks too good to be true, but trust us (…and Time magazine, the UK Design Awards, and the Plastic Industry), this is seriously innovative, fresh design! Even my finicky track bike friends want Cyclocs as stocking stuffers… Check out more details about Cycloc bicycle storage here, then LET’S GO RIDE BIKES!
