Melissa Borrell’s designs involve the user in the process of making an object and understanding the connection between two-dimensional drawings and three-dimensional forms. Borrell’s innovative products are carried by the New York MoMA Design Store as well as many other museum shops around the world. Her unique concept is to create designs that emphasize the interaction between an individual and a product. Her creations have taken the form of jewelry, wall coverings, sculpture, textile design, lighting and home accessories. Borrell’s designs cross the lines between sculpture, graphics, fashion and architecture. Her work pushes the boundaries between art and design. For example, the pop-out pendant gives the illusion that it’s a tattoo, blurring the distinction between an object and a drawing. Her designs and artwork challenge a viewer’s notions of space, art, and functionality and facilitate a new understanding of these concepts.
