iittala

Timeless design since 1881. What started as a glass factory in Iittala, Finland, now celebrates generations of essential objects that are made to enrich people’s everyday lives. We believe objects should be distinctive, combinable and multi-functional, with lasting design that allows for individual use and expression. The progressive philosophy of our design heroes, Kaj Franck and Alvar Aalto, still inspires us to keep Iittala forever relevant. We don’t just create beautiful objects. We believe in timeless design that will never be thrown away.

  7. Tanssi - meaning ‘dance’ in Finnish - is a new tableware collection illustrated by London-based Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi. The Tanssi pattern has been inspired by the visual designs by Klaus Haapaniemi for the Finnish National Opera production of The Cunning Little Vixen, a Czech opera by Leoš Janáček. The sad yet beautiful story exploring the co-existence of animals, humans and the eternal cycle of life, comes alive in Haapaniemi’s rich designs on tableware created by Finnish designer Heikki Orvola. Tanssi introduces mythology into everyday tableware. It makes a good addition to any current Iittala collection, and goes well with basic pieces such as Teema, or the everyday Kartio glasses. In addition to the ceramic pieces, the Tanssi range includes also interior textiles that bring the Tanssi story alive also on home interior.

  9. 2015 marks the 100th anniversary since Tapio Wirkkala’s birth, and this set of two champagne glasses is the perfect commemoration and celebration of his life and works. In classic literature, Ultima Thule is used to reference the furthest possible place in the world. Designed in 1968, the Ultima Thule Glassware similarly references the icy cold reaches of Scandinavia and the distinct expressive power of glass as a medium. The unique melting texture of these pieces are achieved through specialized molds, the first of which were made by Wirkkala himself. Though a break from the typical clean-lined nature of Nordic design, the extraordinary collection gained popularity after being used on Finnair’s first flights between Helsinki and New York. iittala Ultima Thule is still loved today by modern and traditional enthusiasts for its timeless quality and charm.

  10. Each piece of Tapio Wirkkala’s Ultima Thule barware collection features a sophisticated, intriguing pattern that evolved organically during production as the glass burned the surface of the wooden molds. Though the Ultima Thule collection contributed to iittala’s international breakthrough in the 1960s, it still looks as modern today as it did then.
