Creative people who look to improve their own homes and surroundings often come up with great patentable and commercially viable ideas. Anne Paso, the designer of Lovi Oy, a Finnish company founded in 2006 is just such an individual. In 2001, looking to replace the plastic balls on her Christmas tree with wooden ones, Paso came up with a neat way to connect wood strips to form a 360 object using a joint she would eventually patent. In fact, so integral is this idea of the slotted joint to her product, that the company’s name, Lovi, means “slot” in Finnish.

Made of high quality birch, all Lovi products are made in Finland, flat-packed and meant to be self-assembled. Painted pieces are hand-colored with non toxic water based paints. There’s another reason Lovi is a great idea. For every tree they sell, they return the favor to Earth by replanting. On average, one tree is planted in the developing world in drought, flood or desert encroaching areas for each small tree sold, three trees planted for each medium tree, and five for each large tree sold. Since 2008, Lovi has planted about 10,000 trees. That’s a lot of Lovi in the
heart of each tree.
