Professor Oiva Toikka’s Kastehelmi, Finnish for “dewdrop,” evolved
from a technical challenge when Toikka started using glass droplets
to cover joint marks left on the surface of pressed glass pieces. The
result was a popular range of glassware decorated with beads of

iittala Ruutu Vase

The fluidity and vibrant feel of the mouth blown glass creates the delicate character for the Ruutu vase. Ruutu, which means diamond or square in Finnish, is a collection of vases available in five sizes and seven colours.

Created by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Ruutu might be simple in shape but it takes the most skilled craftsmen in the glass factory to produce. The vases are mouth-blown into a steel mould and polished by hand. Each vase is a simplified masterpiece taking seven craftsmen and 24 hours to produce in the Iittala glass factory in Finland. Each Ruutu vase has the designers’ engraving on the bottom.

Ruutu has been awarded the prestigious iF product design award in 2015.
