For as much as modern design gets a bad rap for being unfriendly and even unsafe for children (which we hope we've disproved here), it's often seen as even less compatible with cats. Dogs, sure: you can train them to stay off the furniture, and all you have to do is clean up the shedding. But cats--cats are more independent. They like to make their own decisions about what they do and where they do it. If a cat decides your Barcelona chair is a comfortable place to sleep and claw, there's not too much you can do about it other than set up one of those carpet-clad cat gyms. Which are not exactly stylish, usually. Elizabeth Paige Smith discovered almost by accident that you can make furniture specifically for cats out of material that's perfect for clawing at: corrugated cardboard. She had a prototype chair, made of corrugated cardboard, that her cat Simon adopted as his personal perch. Based on his affinity for the cardboard, she designed a piece of cardboard furniture, specifically proportioned for cats, that was modern and attractive as well as ideal for Simon. From that original Kittypod design, Smith branched out into a variety of cardboard furnishings, all uniquely functional and attractive. Some of them even double as people furniture, but your cat will always know the truth: he (or she) is the one who runs the place now.
